Noded and Open Source beats Big Co and Big Software

The parallel worlds of creative work and software tools are changing drastically thanks to a combination of personal and corporate awakening. Today the technological and philosophical development of the web, and the tools we use on it, is driven by a number of very small companies, communities and even separate (and vocal) individuals. Big software developers’ no longer lead the way in shaping the web we all share.

While this has been true in the web dev world for quite some time, the corporate world is finally waking up to this reality. But only very slowly.

Many companies still have the outdated view that large systems and huge enterprise license software suites are the only alternatives when setting up a corporate “computing” environment.

Both the buyers and sellers of these systems keep this view alive. Huge amounts of money have been invested (wasted) and no one wants to admit it. Not even when the buyer realizes that they are being held “hostage” to a license, and are completely reliant on the provider of the license for all updates and improvements.

Luckily some companies are beginning to understand that open source is a strong alternative, and at the same time they realize that they don’t have to pay huge amounts of overhead since the actual work required to maintain the open source systems need far less people involved compared to enterprise software suites.

I predict that in five to ten years time many of the larger agencies and massive tech companies will be replaced by Noded teams and businesses.

And not just for software. The same goes for ideas and creativity too.

A single person or a small business will be awarded a global advertising client account on the strength of the team they have built around them.

The credibility that used to be the exclusive domain of big agencies will soon belong to Noded organizations. Why? The credibility of any organization is in their deliverables, not their size. And Noded teams do ideas and deliverables better than monolithic companies.

3-4 freelancers or a smaller business will soon deliver the work previously done by 10 people from Elephant Software and 10 people from Rhino Support. They will be more flexible, have less overhead costs and use open source software and online tools that give them and their clients full flexibility.

Open source and the Noded way make great companions. In both cases it’s about changing something old that no longer works, replacing it with something new that will power you in to the future.

In conclusion:

  • More and more “traditionals” are beginning to see the advantages and flexibility of the Noded way. They are joining other freelancers or joining new and smaller, more agile teams instead of large established companies.
  • Paying for “big and feature rich” is being replaced by investing in “open and effective”.
  • Client acquisition is done online based on “what you can do”, not “how big are you”.
  • Traditional agencies exist to deliver campaigns and messages that help their clients do business. Noded teams are doing the same, but often faster, better and at a lower cost.
