New Years Resolution - Get Noded

With a new year ahead of us, why not make a resolution that you will not only want to follow but that will benefit you for years to come. Whether you are a freelancer or employed, make the decision to improve the way you work by starting or joining a Noded team in 09.

If you have read our earlier posts or the straight to the point book, you know what the Noded philosophy is all about and how to immerse yourself in it.

If not, here is a quick guide with some background and a few steps to take today and follow up on as soon as you are back from the celebrations.

1. Think about “why” you work
If you want to build a career doing something you love, and do it according to your own values and ideas, then you’re already in the Noded mindset.

2. Decide how you want to grow as a professional
Do you want to expand and develop professionally at your own (very fast) pace, and in the direction you choose? Good!

3. Kill your dream, nurture the plan
Dreaming about your ideal way of working sounds harmless but it can be devastating. Dreaming will mentally block you from actually doing things. Make a plan instead. Plans are tangible, and can be acted upon. Plus, you create plans and act on them all the time: dinner out with friends, remodelling the bedroom, changing jobs, going on vacation… Plans and actions the lot of them!

4. Write a to-do list (or copy this one)

  • Identify potential clients
  • Research their needs
  • Write a short pitch explaining how you can satisfy those needs
  • Contact at least five potential clients

5. Compile a list of people you want to work with
The definition of a Node team is…

A group of individuals, often but not necessarily geographically far apart, that come together to form temporary or recurring project teams. Unlike ‘distributed teams’ Node teams work for a wide range of clients and any member of a Node team can take the lead to bring in work, manage work and choose their team members.

Who would you like to have in your Node team? Most likely it’s people you already work with as a freelancer, or even colleagues at work (remember, you don’t have to quit your job to get Noded). Think of a project you can do together. Don’t worry about growing the team, it will happen naturally as you think of new things to do and new ways of doing them.

That is, as they say, it. You are now well on your way to getting Noded in 2009.

Welcome to the family.

I really enjoyed this post, and more importantly, felt it applied to me a in a big way, especially with my change in working practice in 2008.

Finally after many years, I am doing something I really love, and also, working with people who inspire me, spur me on to better and are a pleasure to be with.

    Here’s to 2009! :-)
